The LB7 was the first series of Duramax engine to be released running from 2001 to 2004. It was plagued by injector problems but otherwise a very good dependable motor.
The LLY was the second series of Duramax engine to be released running from 2004.5 to 2005. It was plagued by headgasket failure but otherwise a very good dependable motor.
The LBZ was the third series of Duramax engine to be released running from 2006 to 2007. The LBZ is considered to be the "Holy Grail" of Duramax do to its near bullet proof construction and the fact that it is pre-emissions (except for EGR)
